task 3

Professional practice

For our task we didn’t work with a director in our group of three each one of us swapped duties, each one of our groups was a director working alongside a brief.  The brief allowed us to know what our daily task were and our allocated time with our duties were each day.

  • Components:
For the components we had a lot of dialogue and two recorded music components in the whole film. We got the tracks from a public domain on the internet – YouTube, as we didn’t have a CD to take the track off of.  And we ensured the music was Licensed by YouTube as it was a recorded song from a celebrity we had to be cautious when downloading the backing track for our film.
  • Planning:
For the availability of the locations we had to check the spaces that we looked and make sure it was a correct place to shoot. Meaning we had to undergo risk assessments of each location we were planning to shoot. Going to each location we were planning and taking a picture of each location before shooting there. It was part of our planning production So we went and shot at the location when they weren’t busy at all or wasn’t a problem if there was a few people that we there as it would have made it look more realistic.
For the recording equipment, we discussed and planned what we wanted and when we wanted it for. This meant we had to go online and book each equipment before we used it booking what time we would use it and for how long before, we could proceed with the shooting. For the planning we didn’t really plan on what type of software we were going to use, we used final cut pro as it was already downloaded on the computer and we found it more manageable ton use than the other editing software For copyrights we found that we couldn’t use the original version of the actual person so we had to find a different version of a youtuber. Throughout each activity we did each day, it was correctly documented on Google drive and shared on email through each member of our group for reference.
  • Professional practice:
  • Creativity:
Using audio track to compliment the visual content of the production was quite hard at first because we couldn’t decide what was the best song/s to relate to the situation in the film.
As a group we separately went out to listen and try and find songs that would relate to the genre of the film we were producing. We finally came to the conclusion of using an old time R&B song called ‘Foolish- by a singer called Ashanti so then Abigail came up with the idea of using ‘Ashanti – foolish’.  But we used an instrumental as it would have been easier for when we were finishing the movie by doing credits.
  • Edit sound to picture:
In our film we only had to lock sound and vision once with the voiceover because of the voiceover that we chose to record and put in. So syncing them together would make it much easier for us and for the way it looks. For lip synchronising we didn’t really need to do that compared to all the split edits we did, most of the film we made is made up of split edits. Adding music, we chose two songs that would relate to the theme of the genre of the film we made. For background music we didn’t put any in, as there wasn’t enough time but we thought it would be better if there wasn’t any as there was a lot of dialogue in the film.
  • Sound processing and enhancing:

  • Sound sources:
For this we had to check for the level setting like if it was picking up any sound and to see how loud and quiet things were. We did the same for equalisation, making sure that the levels were the same so nothing had more than the other. For mixing dialogue, we made sure that one person wasn’t talking a lot so it went back and forth, like a proper conversation.  We added two different completely sounds of music as one is slow but R&B where the other is slow but alternative. For the effects that we had for the songs was that they would fade in and out in the right place of the film.

38.

Unit 38, recording audio and moving image.

For this task we had to create a short movie, so we had to get into groups of three to four and shoot inside and outside of college hours. With this we had to make our own soundtrack or use pre-existing music that would be relevant for our film.

For our film we decided to use an original R&B song, ‘Ashanti – foolish’. The reason for picking this song is because of the genre of our film and it suited the film perfectly. Not only did we use soundtrack, we used original sound and voice recordings meaning that we had to book equipment several times for our shooting process to go as planned.

For the first scene me and my group agreed on making a voice over for it and this meant that we had to find somewhere suitable and quiet to do the recording so we didn’t have any interruptions or any noise in the background of the recording. Booking the recorder allowed us to have a better quality recording rather than having to record it on one of our phones. Before recording the actual thing, we had some test runs so the recorder was working properly and picking up what we was saying such as looking at the metres and volume units so our recording was correct and in tune.
However, the first time we used it, it didn’t go to plan meaning that because we didn’t know how to use it at first, we didn’t get anything recorded when we thought we did. As the first one didn’t go to plan, we changed the recording process by booking a mic and a camera and used that to record the voice over. By doing this, it was a much better option and process as the mic was directly near the mouth of the person speaking and by doing it connected to the camera it was so much easier as we knew it would be saved the memory card directly.

the relationship between sound and moving image.

.

Film: 2 fast 2 furious www.imdb.com/title/tt0322259

The relationship between sound and picture moving image is that it makes it more appealing to the audience as they can hear and see the action. For this film it’s important for the sound and moving image to match as it is a car racing action film, if they didn’t it wouldn’t be sound effective especially with all the sound of the engines. 2 fast 2 furious has a variation of diegetic sound throughout the film such as the voices of the characters, music that is both on and off screen and also the sound made from the objects in the film such as the cars wheels and the revving of the engine. For the film there are about 17 songs for the soundtrack as well as tempos and beats, which built up suspense.

Full house is another example of one that diegetic sound as they have voices of the characters, sounds made by objects in the scene and they also have music. The sound is found on screen, however they do have some non-diegetic that is represented coming from the source outside the story place, such as the laughing and clapping in the background the audience. This gives the effect that the storyline and the jokes are funny. The sound pitch is varied in different kinds of levels as the actors have different voice pitches.

For this handheld video, all the or most of the sound is diegetic with a range of different levels from obviously all the different people speaking in the video, the range level changes from high to low from different people.

For this YouTube video most of the sound is diegetic sound as they two people are talking with a range of different levels. Music is also found in the video, just for an introduction which is off screen.

Animation – princess and the frog https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEJsUVXfeDw

The princess and the frog is an animation, that using non-diegetic sound as they have sort of a narrative, mood music and sound affect made for dramatic affect for the film. They also used real life sounds such as the click of the heels and the crying scenes. They also have 17 songs on a soundtrack that goes with the film, as they are played in the film. It is important for the animation and the sound have to match up perfectly otherwise they don’t have much of an effect on the audience.
